The Advent Fast begins on the 16th of Hator (November 25 or 26) and ends on the 29th of Khiak (January 7 or 8), the Feast of the Nativity.  This 43 day fast commemorates two events.  First, just as Moses spent forty days on Mount Sinai preparing to receive the commandments, the Church also fasts in order to prepare for the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Second, three days commemorate the fasting and prayer of the believers before the miracle of the moving of the Muqattam Mountain.

Nativity (Christmas) Fast

The Church fasts the Nativity fast from November 26 to January 6.  The Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ is then celebrated on 7 January 2011.  Many wonder why the Western churches celebrate the birth of Christ on the 25th of December while many of the Eastern churches celebrate it on the 7th of January.  The answer to this question has been answered in "Calculations of the Date of the Glorious Feast of Nativity."
